about

I’ve been avoiding writing a press release for my new EP “Airing of Grievances” because frankly my writing has never been very professional. I’m no good at selling myself, but I’d say I’m pretty good at being honest, so here’s a little bit about how these songs came to be.

I wrote these four tunes as a follow up to my last EP “Out From Under.” I guess you could say they’re the second installment in a story I’ve been trying to tell. It’s my story, and it’s all true, but through playing these songs live I learned it’s many peoples' story.

These songs are about the magic of New York City, the first home I’ve ever loved. They’re about sitting in a bar at five in the morning with the doors locked, listening to a song you won’t remember, but in the moment it means the absolute world to you. They're about watching the early risers go to work and not wanting to trade places with them for the world. They’re about loving someone so much you think your rib cage will explode. These are the songs you play at an open mic down the street, and your friends show up to sing along every week without fail. They’re the songs you sing in the hope that they'll make somebody love you. The songs you write to capture the perfect moments.

This would be a boring CD if these songs were all romance and fairytales. In order to enjoy the light you have to know the dark. These EP's tell the story of the lady who keeps you up all night and makes you sleep all day, that mistress depression. You hop on planes to escape her, you tire people out talking about her, you drink her away, and you swear you’ll keep running from her until the day you die. They’re about the love you throw away on someone who can’t love themselves. These songs are about the nights you can’t remember when you were prey to whatever wolves were out. They’re about mistakes that wake you up in the morning. These are the songs you write because it’s the least destructive thing you can do.

For me, an exciting life is putting together the highest of highs with your lowest of lows. Frankly, that’s how I like my rock’n’roll as well.

So I took these songs, rough and sharp, and handed them to my band. I told them they could do what they wanted with them. Ryan Shapiro, with his beautiful keys, made sure the songs kept their romance. Pete O’Neill, with his funky bass, made sure that even the darkest tune still made you move. Allyson Clare on viola took even the happiest tune and made it haunting. And Neil Nunziato on drums reeled us all in, kept it steady, and made it rock’n’roll.

In one crazy day, at Atomic Sound Studios in Red Hook, Brooklyn, we made this record, thanks to the tireless efforts of our sound engineer Dakota Bowman and our co-producer/mixerTerry Edelman.

We created something that I’m truly proud of. When we left the studio that day these songs we’re no longer for me, but for all of you. I hope you enjoy them. I hope they help you on the bad days, make you smile on the good days, and inspire you to party all night.
